THE DESIGNER, FIONA FAGAN

Fiona Fagan grew up in country New South Wales in Australia on a farm where she was exposed to the beauty of the Australian landscape and its harshness.
Her designs draw inspiration from the land in which she was raised with its contrasts, raw beauty and sensitivities. Inspired by the environment around her, Fiona’s colour pallets are often earthy with a strong infusion of the vivid colours also found in Australian floral and fauna.
Growing up on an isolated farm, without easy access to the urban conveniences of many retail clothing stores, Fiona’s mother would cut and sew her clothes. Thus, from a very young age, Fiona developed a very strong interest and a growing awareness of beautiful fabrics hence began her passion for textiles.
Fiona Fagan trained firstly as a pattern maker and then as a Textile Designer in Sydney gaining a Bachelor of Design in Textile and Fashion Design. With over 20 years experience in the Fashion and textile industry, Fiona has designed for fashion, bed linen, swimwear, children’s wear, ceramic/home wares, soft furnishings, stationery and bath/body products.
Apart from being a freelance designer – designing and selling her own designs since 1999 – Fiona has also been an agent for leading edge UK textile design studios.
Fiona’s freelance design clients include Martin and Savage, Alex Liddy Homewares, Tiger Lily, Jets Swimwear, Seafolly, Aztec Rose, MoonTide (New Zealand ), Leutenegger, Gulf Star Products (New Zealand), Dolina, David Lawrence, Jigsaw, Dickens and Hawthorn, Target and Gazal Apparel.
Fiona’s design work encompasses both the traditional hand-painted and computer generated designs.
Fiona has written two Textile craft books, Simply This and Simply Shibori. Published by New Holland Publishers. Simply This is available on Amazon.com and Simply Shibori will be released shortly.
Fiona was engaged as a visual artist for Moorambilla Voices 2010-2014, producing hand-dyed costumes for 180 children, designing the festival t-shirt and workshopping with the local community. She has collaborated with local indigenous artists, the Wailwan Ngemba women and Frank Wright to create and assemble backdrops for the Gala concerts held at the end of the music festivals.
Outside of design, Fiona’s interests include cooking, landscape design, gardening, choral singing, dragon boating and outrigger canoeing, mother of two and a cancer survivor.
